Senior BJP leader Sushil Modi passed away on Monday evening at Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences after a battle with cancer. The 72-year-old had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of AIIMS for the past month.

Once the prominent face of the BJP in Bihar, he had withdrawn from the ongoing Lok Sabha elections due to his declining health. He made this announcement via social media on April 3, stating, “I have been battling cancer for the last 6 months. Now I feel that the time has come to tell people. I will not be able to do anything in the Lok Sabha elections. I have told everything to the PM. Always grateful and always dedicated to the country, Bihar, and the party.”

His absence was particularly significant in Bihar, where he wielded considerable influence over the party, cultivated over three decades. Serving as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar in two terms spanning 11 years between 2005 and 2020, he played a pivotal role in the state’s political landscape alongside Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Sushil Modi’s demise was mourned by several senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Ravi Shankar Prasad. Amit Shah expressed his grief, acknowledging Sushil Modi’s contributions to Bihar politics and his dedication to the welfare of the marginalized. BJP Chief JP Nadda lauded Sushil Modi’s lifelong commitment to Bihar’s development and his instrumental role in steering the state towards progress.

Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to Sushil Modi’s work for Bihar’s advancement, while former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi extended his condolences, highlighting Sushil Modi’s contributions as a Deputy Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP.

Even political rivals such as Tejashwi Yadav and Mamata Banerjee offered their condolences, recognizing Sushil Modi’s role in Bihar politics and his dedication to public service.

Sushil Modi’s passing marks the end of an era in Bihar politics, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication that will be remembered by many.
