Delhi Forecast: Cloudy Skies and Heatwave Conditions Ahead

Delhi is bracing for a week of mixed weather conditions as predicted by the Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi. The forecast indicates that cloudy skies will prevail over the city until June 1. On Thursday, May 30, residents can expect partly cloudy conditions with some areas experiencing heatwave conditions. The weather office also hinted at the possibility of a thunderstorm with light rain or drizzle. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shifted from a ‘red alert’ for heatwave on Wednesday to an ‘orange alert’ for Thursday, forecasting a slight temperature decrease of 2°C to 3°C. “Partly cloudy skies with heatwave conditions in certain places, and a chance of thunderstorm or dust storm accompanied by very light rain or drizzle with gusty winds (25-35 km/h),” detailed the regional meteorological centre for Thursday.

The maximum temperature in Delhi is predicted to reach around 45°C. The cloudy weather is expected to persist until June 1, after which the region may see a break from light rain or drizzle until June 4.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre at IMD, mentioned to ANI, “For Thursday, we have issued an orange alert, with temperatures expected to drop by 2-3 degrees. On May 31 and June 1, due to western disturbances, thunderstorms and lightning are likely in Delhi-NCR and the Northwest region. By June 1, temperatures will decrease by 3-4 degrees.”

The maximum temperatures recorded across Delhi at 8.30 am on Thursday were as follows:

  • Safdarjung: 46.8°C
  • Palam: 47.0°C
  • Lodhi Road: 46.2°C
  • Ridge: 47.3°C
  • Ayanagar: 46.8°C

The IMD also announced that the ongoing heatwave conditions in Northwest and Central India are expected to ease gradually from May 30. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a scorching temperature of 52.3°C in Mungeshpur, the highest ever recorded in India. Union Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju posted on X, expressing skepticism about this record and indicating that senior IMD officials were verifying the report. The official stance will be clarified soon.
