Tech Mahindra Mourns the Loss of Vineet Nayyar at 85

Vineet Nayyar, a distinguished figure in the Indian business landscape and the former executive vice chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away at the age of 85. His passing marks the end of an era for the Mahindra Group, where his influence and leadership were pivotal.

Nayyar’s illustrious career began as an IAS officer and extended to significant international roles, including a tenure at the World Bank. His contributions to India’s energy sector were notable as the inaugural chairman of GAIL, where he laid the foundations for the state-owned corporation’s future growth. Nayyar also held prominent positions in the tech industry, including managing director of HCL Corporation Limited and vice chairman of HCL Technologies Limited.

In 2000, Vineet Nayyar joined Mahindra British Telecom (MBT), which was later renamed Tech Mahindra. Alongside two colleagues, they were affectionately called the “Three Musketeers” within the company, bringing a startup mentality that propelled MBT to the upper echelons of the Indian IT industry. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, highlighted Nayyar’s transformative impact on Tech Mahindra, praising his wisdom and leadership.

Following the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from across the industry. Nasscom, the leading IT industry body, acknowledged Nayyar’s visionary leadership and the indelible mark he left on the industry. CP Gurnani, former MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra, expressed deep personal sorrow, describing Nayyar as a friend, philosopher, brother, and guide. Mohit Joshi, the current MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra, noted Nayyar’s foundational contributions as an institution builder whose ambitious vision will continue to guide the company.

The Mahindra Group shared the news with profound sadness, emphasizing Nayyar’s statesmanship, sharp business acumen, and dedication to society. They extended their thoughts and prayers to his family, vowing to uphold the values he instilled in the organization. Anand Mahindra’s emotional tribute underscored the personal and professional loss felt by many who knew and worked with Nayyar.
