Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent Congress leader, is poised to make her debut in the Lok Sabha elections by contesting from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency. This development follows her brother, Rahul Gandhi, vacating the Wayanad seat after winning it in the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi has decided to retain the Raebareli constituency, a traditional stronghold of the Gandhi family, thus creating an opportunity for Priyanka to enter the electoral fray. The announcement was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who expressed confidence in Priyanka’s ability to represent Wayanad effectively. Priyanka expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm, stating, “I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad and I will not let them feel his (Rahul Gandhi’s) absence. I will work hard and try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative.”
Priyanka Gandhi emphasized her deep-rooted connection with Raebareli and Amethi, promising to assist her brother in these constituencies while also dedicating herself to Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi, reflecting on his tenure as Wayanad’s MP, acknowledged the emotional challenge of vacating the seat. He expressed his appreciation for the support he received from the people of Wayanad over the past five years, vowing to continue visiting and fulfilling promises made to the constituency. “The last five years as a member of Parliament from Wayanad have been a very fantastic and enjoyable experience. The people of Wayanad gave me support, energy to fight in a very difficult time. I will never forget that,” Rahul stated.
During a strategic meeting at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, attended by senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Priyanka Gandhi, the decision was finalized for Rahul to retain Raebareli. This meeting underscored the party’s commitment to ensuring robust representation in both constituencies, with Rahul Gandhi affirming that both Raebareli and Wayanad would continue to receive dedicated attention from their respective MPs. Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into the electoral race from Wayanad marks a significant moment for the Congress party, as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the southern state of Kerala.
